1. Brussels indeed delivers on its offerings of classic Belgian delights of waffles, mussels, frites, and beer. After a short walk through the city, at nearly the same instant, A+C made the following remarks:
C: I'm surprised we haven't seen a waffle shop yet
A: Oh look, a waffle place!
It goes without saying that a waffle was purchased for 1 euro.
2. Cobblestone sidewalks make hauling rolling luggage surprisingly difficult. After a bit of an uphill struggle from Brussels Central station to the hotel yesterday, while planning our 1.6km walk from the hotel to the train station this morning, sidewalk qualility was an important heuristic. Fortunitely Google Street View has Brussels well-covered. We could of course have pulled out the backpack straps from our convertible luggage, but carrying a 30-pound backpack is also not too awesome.
3. European rail travel is excellent as usual. Of particular note are the tray tables, which are lage, level, firm, and easy to fold and unfold. This is compared to Amtrak's tray tables in the USA which are too small, floppy, and not level. Amtrak take note!
A selection of pictures from Brussels:
A on a cute Brussels street
C causing trouble already
Lovely view of Notre Dame de Grand Sablon church outside our hotel window
Our tiny computer on the big train tray table
Hmm....inspiration to make waffles for breakfast!
ReplyDeleteI think I remember the cobblestone streets causing luggage trouble on a previous trip(s).
ReplyDeleteIs it wrong to eat waffles and drink beer at the same time when in Belgium? :-)
Chris and Abby -- Thanks for sharing. Suzanne just told me about this. John N
ReplyDeleteDid you notice how real Belgian waffles (made with yeast) taste different (and in my opinion better) than the so-called Belgian waffles we mostly get in North America?
