(September 19th)
Being on a 3-month round-the-world trip, and also 3-months without a paycheck, we try to save money where possible.  Today we would be doing just that – taking public transportation from central Connecticut to JFK rather than hiring a car service for $250+.  Our journey would involve five trains:
- Shoreline East Railroad to New Haven ($6 each)
 - Metro North Railroad to Grand Central Station in NYC ($15 each)
 - NYC Subway 7 train ($2.50 each)
 - NYC Subway E train to Jamaica station (free transfer)
 - JFK AirTrain to the terminal ($5 each)

All conections went smoothly.  C almost caused a problem when he nearly boarded the M train instead of the E train in NY just as the doors were closing, but he didn’t and we recovered. In the end our five-train route took 4.5 hours instead of probably two hours with a car service (125% time penalty), for a total cost of $58 (77% cost savings.)  And it enabled us to write this blog post.   :)

I'm thinking this might be worth trying the next time we go out of JFK!
